Emergency Plumbing: What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives

Plumbing emergencies strike without warning, and the actions you take in the first few minutes determine how much damage your home sustains. Whether you are dealing with a burst pipe, a sewage backup, or a gas leak, having a plan of action before the emergency happens gives you a critical advantage.

For a burst pipe or major leak, the first step is to shut off the main water valve. Every member of your household should know where this valve is located — typically near the water meter at the front of the property or where the main line enters the house. Turn the valve clockwise to stop all water flow. Next, open the lowest faucet in the house to drain remaining water from the pipes and reduce pressure. If water is near electrical outlets or your breaker panel, shut off electricity to the affected area from the main panel.

For a sewage backup, stop using all water in the house immediately. Do not flush toilets, run sinks, or use the washing machine, as additional water will worsen the backup. Open windows for ventilation if there are strong odors. Keep children and pets away from contaminated water, which can carry harmful bacteria. Do not attempt to clean up sewage yourself until the line has been cleared and a professional has confirmed the backup is resolved.

For a suspected gas leak — indicated by a rotten egg smell near gas appliances or gas lines — leave the house immediately without operating any electrical switches, which can create a spark. Call your gas utility company from outside the home, then call a licensed plumber. Do not re-enter the home until a professional has confirmed it is safe.
